Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Trials Begin in Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
The FAA has launched a three-year program of hybrid-electric aircraft demonstration flights in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated a three-year program of hybrid-electric aircraft demonstration flights in the Mid-Atlantic region. The program involves multiple states and companies testing various electric and autonomous aircraft to gather data for future operational requirements and potential revenue-generating passenger services.
## Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Demonstration Flights
The FAA on Tuesday said prototype hybrid-electric aircraft recently began a series of demonstration flights in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania that are expected to continue for three years. The flights aim to validate Electra's "direct aviation" concept, enabling efficient regional travel between major airports and unconventional "access points" like small airfields or even parking lots, thanks to its EL9's ultra-short takeoff ability.
## Electra's EL2 Goldfinch Demonstrator
Manassas, Virginia-based Electra, which conducted the flights using its EL2 Goldfinch demonstrator, said it connected Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL) to four small airports across the three states. The EL2 flew into Washington Manassas Airport (KHEF) in Virginia, Millville Executive Airport (KMIV) in New Jersey, and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (KPNE) in Pennsylvania.
## FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program
The FAA's initiative is part of the broader eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), which involves multiple states and companies testing various electric and autonomous aircraft. The program aims to gather data for future operational requirements and potential revenue-generating passenger services.
