Two South Korean loitering munitions crashed into the sea immediately after being launched from a naval vessel. The failed maritime test occurred on August 25, 2026, involving the K-LUCAS drone launched from the ROKS Marado, a 14,000-ton Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship.

Neither aircraft reached its intended target, an unmanned vessel two kilometers away. The first drone plunged into the water roughly two seconds after launch. A second attempt later that day met a similar fate, with the aircraft crashing after about four seconds of flight.

Launcher Defect Identified

South Korea's Agency for Defense Development (ADD) stated on August 28 that its initial investigation pinpointed the cause. The problem was a misaligned door on the lower section of the shipboard launcher.

The launcher contains two levels of launch tubes. According to the ADD, a door on the left side of a lower tube was slightly out of alignment. When a drone was fired from an upper tube, launch forces briefly pushed this misaligned door inward.

This created an imbalance. The departing drone was pushed sharply to the right, causing it to lose control almost instantly. The door's deformation was temporary, snapping back to its original position after launch. This made the defect difficult to spot during post-crash inspections.

The agency confirmed the drones themselves and the overall weapon system were operating normally. Investigators are now examining how the misalignment occurred, considering possibilities from assembly to transport or loading operations.

ADD noted the same launch tube had been used successfully before. The problem did not surface during approximately 30 prior land-based tests.

K-LUCAS Programme Details

The crashed aircraft were K-LUCAS drones, a domestically produced long-range loitering munition. The weapon has a wingspan of about three meters. It is designed for endurance flights exceeding 10 hours, capable of reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike missions.

South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back announced in June 2026 that the military planned to accelerate the K-LUCAS deployment. This is part of a major expansion of the country's unmanned weapons capabilities.

The national plan calls for acquiring over 20,000 low-cost drones by 2030. The desired fleet ranges from short-range reconnaissance aircraft to attack drones like the K-LUCAS. South Korea is also developing more advanced capabilities, including artificial intelligence-enabled drone swarms.

This push unfolds as North Korea continues to grow its own unmanned aircraft arsenal. Relatively inexpensive one-way attack drones are also playing an increasingly prominent role in global conflicts.
