The seats are Elevate’s Altitude - an aisle-facing herringbone suite, adapted in a slightly less angled version to fit the MAX 10’s narrower fuselage than the one now flying on United’s A321XLR and Coastliner A321neo fleet. CEO Scott Kirby’s public explanation, given to CNBC this month, is simple: the seats “don’t fit on other airplanes.” Every outlet covering the story has read that as a timeline problem - seats bought in 2018 for a jet whose certification kept slipping, with United’s premium strategy moving to the A321neo in the meantime.

The company’s squad database shows that the A321neo fleet is fully equipped with these suites, while the MAX 10 remains empty. United’s CEO Scott Kirby has not indicated any plans to retrofit the MAX 10 with the suites.
