Alaska Airlines Cuts Seven Routes, Revives

Alaska Airlines is canceling seven routes and reinstating a popular intra-California flight, according to a report from Ishrion Aviation. The changes involve cuts to several seasonal and recently launched services while bringing back a connection between San Jose and Los Angeles with increased capacity.

Three Puerto Vallarta Routes Dropped

Three of the canceled routes are seasonal services to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Alaska will not resume flights from Puerto Vallarta to Sacramento, St. Louis, or New York-JFK in 2027. The airline only began operating these routes last year, typically running them between January and April. The final flights on the Puerto Vallarta-JFK and Puerto Vallarta-Sacramento routes occurred in April, while the St. Louis service ended in March. Scheduled data from Cirium shows none are planned to return.

The slot at JFK previously used for the Puerto Vallarta flight is reportedly being reallocated to a fifth daily Seattle-JFK service. These cuts are part of a broader shift where Alaska is reducing capacity in Mexico while expanding its focus on Hawaii. The airline had already removed its Puerto Vallarta-Las Vegas service.

Two Santa Rosa Services Ended

Alaska is also ending two routes from Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, California. The carrier is canceling its Santa Rosa to Salt Lake City and Santa Rosa to Ontario services. The Ontario route is notable because the oneworld alliance member only launched it in March. It replaced a connection previously operated by Avelo Airlines, which canceled it in April 2025 before leaving the airport entirely later that year.

Alaska and the airport had said the Ontario route would provide a reliable link between Sonoma County and the Inland Empire. It currently operates daily with an Embraer E175, but schedules show it ending on October 31. The Santa Rosa-Salt Lake City service is also being dropped. Alaska had planned to operate up to a daily flight on that route from November 1 through April 21, 2027, but has now removed it.

San Jose-Los Angeles Returns With Larger Jets

In a positive move for California travelers, Alaska is bringing back its San Jose-Los Angeles route. The airline first launched the service in 2017 but discontinued it in January this year. It was cut alongside several other California services, a decision the airline attributed to slower-than-expected new aircraft deliveries in 2026.

The San Jose-Los Angeles service will return on November 1. Alaska will operate four daily flights on the route. Crucially, the airline will use its 173-seat Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, which feature 157 economy and 16 business class seats. Before the route was discontinued, it was operated with a 76-seat Embraer E175, meaning the reinstated service will offer more than double the capacity.
