American Airlines unveils premium-heavy retrofitted Boeing
American Airlines revealed its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER on September 2, 2026, featuring 144 premium seats, the most of any U.S.

American Airlines unveiled its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The Fort Worth-based carrier says the long-range jet now features the highest number of premium seats on any aircraft operated by a U.S. Airline.
The airline showed the plane at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport ahead of a promotional flight to New York. Its first commercial service was scheduled for that same night, operating from New York to Buenos Aires. Jim Moses, American Airlines senior vice president of DFW operations, stated the aircraft exemplifies the company's commitment to investing in its fleet and customer experience with more premium offerings.
A Sea of Premium Seats
The redesigned cabin configuration is dominated by premium seating. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper described the interior as "a sea of business class seats that goes on and on." The retrofit results in a total of 144 premium seats across three categories.
| Cabin Class | Number of Seats |
|---|---|
| Flagship Suites | 70 |
| Premium Economy | 44 |
| Main Cabin Extra (extra legroom) | 30 |
Following its debut, the aircraft is slated to serve the airline's most popular long-haul routes. These include flights to London, Tokyo, and Sydney.
Flagship Suite Details and Phase-Out
The new Flagship Suites replace the previous Flagship First product on the Boeing 777-300ER. Flagship First suites will be phased out on this aircraft type from November 19, 2026. For transcontinental flights, they will become unavailable starting March 28, 2027.
The Flagship Suites are fully lie-flat seats offering 21 to 22 inches of width, compared to 17 inches in standard economy. Each suite is equipped with a privacy door. Amenities include bedding, pajamas, amenity kits, noise-canceling headphones, and a wireless charging pad.
Boeing Partnership and Interior Updates
Ryan Weir, Boeing's vice president of commercial sales and marketing, commented on the partnership. He said it means a "great deal" to Boeing that American Airlines operates an all-Boeing wide-body fleet. Weir added that these airplanes connect customers to global destinations and that Boeing is proud to support American's operations.
Beyond the seating, American Airlines updated general interior features throughout the aircraft. The enhancements focus on improved lighting and overall passenger comfort. Nat Pieper called the retrofitted 777-300ER "the embodiment of America's ambitions."
