EASA downgrades Jordan airspace risk
The EU aviation safety agency downgraded Jordan's conflict zone risk to medium on August 31, 2026, the same day Jordan intercepted eight missiles.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) eased its airspace warning for Jordan on August 31, 2026. This revision downgraded the risk to civil aviation from high to medium.
EASA's Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB) no longer recommends operators avoid the Amman flight information region (FIR) entirely. The previous version had prohibited all operations within that airspace at any altitude. Operators are now advised to conduct current risk assessments, maintain contingency plans, and be ready to follow state instructions promptly. The bulletin's validity was extended to September 30, 2026.
The agency attributed the change to a quiet August. "After a sustained increase in kinetic military activity in July 2026, no kinetic activity was observed in August 2026," the bulletin states. It notes Jordan has published no conflict-related airspace restrictions, meaning operators should prepare for tactical deconfliction if activity resumes. On the same day as the revision, Jordan's military reported an intercept. The official spokesman for the Jordanian Armed Forces stated that air defense systems destroyed eight missiles which penetrated the kingdom's airspace at dawn on August 31. He said the missiles were eliminated before threatening citizens or property.
EASA also revises Lebanon bulletin
EASA also revised its Lebanon bulletin on August 31, 2026. It restored a limited exception for operations at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY). Flights are permitted where the approach begins and the departure ends over the sea, subject to rigorous risk assessment and monitoring. Lebanese airspace outside that specific carve-out remains assessed as high risk. EASA said recurrent ceasefire violations were observed in August, primarily in southern Lebanon.
Separate UAE drone incident reported
In a separate regional incident, the UAE Ministry of Defense reported an engagement on August 31, 2026. The UAE Air Force engaged a drone detected over the country's territorial waters as it approached from Iran.
EASA had issued a warning for Gulf airspace covering Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates on July 14, 2026.
Bulletin validity and applicability
Both the revised Jordan and Lebanon bulletins remain valid until September 30, 2026, unless reviewed earlier. CZIBs are recommendations, not mandates. They apply to operators governed by EU regulation 965/2012 and to third-country operators holding EASA authorizations. National authorities retain ultimate control over their sovereign airspace.
