KLM's First Airbus A350 Nears Delivery for October Service
KLM's first Airbus A350-900, named 'The Night Watch', is in final testing in Toulouse. The aircraft will enter service on October 9, 2026, initially flying five times weekly to Toronto, with more routes to Canada and Africa planned.

KLM's first Airbus A350-900 is undergoing final testing in Toulouse ahead of its delivery. The aircraft, manufacturer serial number 809 and carrying the future registration PH-ZNA, will be named 'The Night Watch' after the famous Rembrandt painting.
Before delivery, the jet must complete ground and flight testing, including engine runs and systems checks. KLM and Airbus will also conduct acceptance procedures. Once in Amsterdam, the airline will not immediately deploy it on long-haul routes. Introducing the new type requires extensive pilot and crew training, as well as operational proving flights.
Entry into Service Schedule
KLM has pushed back the A350's entry into service. The first commercial flight is now planned for October 9, 2026. It will operate the KL691/692 rotation from Amsterdam to Toronto five times per week. The airline cautions that schedules remain subject to change during the delivery and preparation phase.
Initial A350 Route Network
Toronto is just the start for KLM's A350 operations. The airline has filed plans to deploy the aircraft on several long-haul routes during the 2026/27 winter season. The A350 is set to become a fixture on KLM's African network alongside its Canadian services.
| Route | Start Date | Initial Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam to Toronto | 9 October 2026 | 5 times weekly |
| Amsterdam to Montreal | 30 November 2026 | 3 times weekly |
| Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro/Dar es Salaam | 1 December 2026 | Selected services |
| Amsterdam to Zanzibar/Dar es Salaam | 6 December 2026 | Selected services |
| Amsterdam to Nairobi | 5 January 2027 | Selected services |
As more aircraft arrive, frequencies are expected to increase. Toronto service, for example, was scheduled to rise to six weekly flights from January 2027 and daily from March.
Fleet Renewal and Specifications
The A350 is a key part of a major fleet renewal for the Air France-KLM Group. The group has a firm order for 50 Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, with purchase rights for 40 more. Deliveries are scheduled through the end of the decade. Of the firm orders, 22 A350s are currently allocated to KLM.
These new jets will gradually replace older types in KLM's long-haul fleet, including Airbus A330-200s, A330-300s, and Boeing 777-200ERs. According to KLM, the A350 uses approximately 25% less fuel than the 777-200ER and has a noise footprint about 40% smaller.
The wider group fleet programme also includes the Airbus A350F freighter, which will replace older Boeing 747 freighters used in KLM and Martinair cargo operations.
