United Airlines will begin flying its shortest European route in June 2027. The new service will connect Newark Liberty International Airport with Lajes on Terceira island in the Azores, according to an announcement made earlier this week.

The route will be operated three times weekly using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. With a block time of five hours and 15 minutes eastbound, it will become the carrier's briefest flight to Europe by both time and distance. United will be the only US airline offering nonstop flights to Lajes.

Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, commented on the network expansion. "Whether it's a business trip, a dream honeymoon, a bucket-list adventure, or a trip home to see family, we're making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline can match," he stated.

Performance of existing US-Azores routes

Data from aviation analytics company Cirium indicates existing US-Azores routes have seen solid demand. For the 12 months to May 2026, United's existing Newark to Ponta Delgada service averaged a load factor of 75.44% across 114 rotations.

TAP Air Portugal's route from Lajes to San Francisco achieved the highest load factor in the market at 85.17%. This performance was based on just 16 rotations during the same period.

Azores Airlines operates four routes between the archipelago and the United States. Their load factors for the 12 months to May 2026 are detailed below.

Ponta Delgada (PDL) to Boston (BOS)83.99%
Lajes (TER) to New York-JFK69.83%

United's other short transatlantic routes

The new Lajes service displaces United's Newark to Ponta Delgada route as its shortest to Europe. Based on block times for next summer, the airline's ranking of its briefest European flights is now led by the new Azores connection.
