Japan's Unique Aircraft for Aviation Enthusiasts
A guide for plane spotters visiting Japan highlights distinctive domestic airlines and aircraft rarely seen outside the country, including ANA's colorful

Japan offers plane spotters a unique array of aircraft, many of which are rarely seen beyond its borders. The country's busy domestic market and spotter-friendly airports provide excellent opportunities to photograph distinctive airframes and liveries.
ANA Airbus A380 ‘Flying Honu’
ANA operates three uniquely colorful Airbus A380s, known as the Flying Honu. Each superjumbo wears a different sea turtle-inspired livery in blue, green, or orange. These aircraft are deployed exclusively on the route between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu, making Narita one of only two airports worldwide where they can be regularly seen.
Distinctive Japanese Carriers
Several domestic airlines operate fleets that are a draw for enthusiasts. ZIPAIR Tokyo, a low-cost long-haul carrier owned by Japan Airlines, operates a fleet of eight Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners as of July 2026 from its Narita base.
Fuji Dream Airlines flies colorful Embraer E170 and E175 regional jets on domestic routes, with Nagoya Komaki and Shizuoka being key airports. IBEX Airlines specializes in regional domestic flying with its Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft, often seen at Sendai and Osaka Itami.
J-AIR, the regional subsidiary of Japan Airlines, operates domestic feeder services using Embraer E170 and E190 jets, best spotted at Osaka Itami. AIRDO, based in Hokkaido, operates Boeing 737-700s and 767-300ERs on domestic routes, with its 767s configured for up to 288 seats. Tokyo Haneda and Sapporo New Chitose are prime locations for this carrier.
Special Liveries and Government Fleet
ANA currently flies two prominent Pokémon-themed jets. The Pikachu Jet NH is Boeing 787-9 JA894A, and the Eevee Jet NH is Boeing 777-300ER JA784A. These special schemes are expected to remain until around 2028, with ANA publishing likely route lists for spotters.
Beyond commercial aviation, the Japan Coast Guard operates a diverse fleet. As of April 2026, it listed 99 aircraft, including 33 fixed-wing planes and 61 helicopters.
The fixed-wing fleet includes models from several manufacturers below.
| Aircraft Type | Model |
|---|---|
| Gulfstream | V |
| Dassault | Falcon 2000 |
| Bombardier | Dash 8 Q300 |
| Saab | 340 |
| Beechcraft | King Air 350 |
| Cessna | 172 |
Its helicopter fleet includes types such as the Airbus Super Puma, Leonardo AW139, Sikorsky S-76, Bell 412, and Bell 505.
Regional Turboprop Operator
For a contrast to the major jets, Oriental Air Bridge operates ATR 42-600 turboprops on short regional sectors linking islands in western Japan, particularly around Nagasaki and Kyushu. This carrier remains almost unknown to many overseas enthusiasts but is a staple in its home region.
