The Laredo Youth Pilot Program, a free initiative aimed at providing young students with aviation education, has seen an overwhelming response since its launch in April. According to program director Victor Trevino, the program received more than 1,000 applications, far surpassing the initial expectation of around 50 students.

## Demand Exceeds Expectations

The program is designed for students aged 12 to 18 and offers ground-school instruction at no cost. Students study a range of subjects, including aerodynamics, weather, aircraft systems, avionics, and safety procedures. Organizers also planned mentorship opportunities through volunteer pilots when the program was first announced.

The program's director, Victor Trevino, emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for young students to reach their full potential. "This is about opportunity. This is about exposure," he said. "For kids to really reach their potential."

## Possible High School Expansion

Victor Trevino has discussed the program with a local congressman, who directed him toward an initiative called VMax that could expand aviation education into area high schools. The proposed expansion would include flight simulators in participating schools and aviation coursework similar to other STEM programs. According to Trevino, as much as $5 million in federal funding could be involved in this initiative.

Trevino also noted that parents have been actively involved in the program, regularly attending sessions alongside their children since its inception. "It's not just for kids that are straight A students, it's for kids that have a passion to become better," he said.
