Japan Airlines orders Embraer E190-E2 for J-AIR fleet renewal
Japan Airlines has selected up to 26 Embraer E190-E2 jets to replace J-AIR's existing regional fleet, with deliveries starting in fiscal 2029.

Japan Airlines has confirmed plans to introduce up to 26 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft for its regional subsidiary J-AIR. The airline selected the jet to replace Embraer E170 and E190 aircraft operated by J-AIR, calling it a core part of its long-term strategy for a sustainable domestic network.
JAL states the aircraft is suited to future demand and environmental goals and will support regional economies. The decision supports the airline's response to declining domestic demand and rising costs while advancing its sustainability goals for regional air connectivity.
Order details and timeline
The agreement includes 16 firm orders and options for 10 additional aircraft. JAL announced the order on October 14, 2026. Deliveries of the Embraer E190-E2 are scheduled to begin in Japan's 2029 financial year, which runs from April 2029 to March 2030.
The airline has not specified the delivery sequence, first commercial service date, or a timetable for completing the fleet replacement. The order provides flexibility to expand the programme based on future operational needs.
Aircraft capabilities and benefits
The Embraer E190-E2 incorporates Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared turbofan engines. It features a redesigned wing and aerodynamic improvements.
According to JAL, the new-generation engines and redesigned wing deliver significant gains in fuel efficiency and a substantial reduction in carbon emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft. Embraer states the E-Jets E2 family offers up to 29% better fuel efficiency per seat than first-generation E-Jets.
The jet is also much quieter. Embraer claims the E2 family achieves up to a 68% reduction in noise footprint compared to predecessors, which reduces the impact on communities near airports. Its reliability and durable components are expected to lower maintenance costs.
The aircraft allows J-AIR to serve smaller passenger markets on regional routes. Key specifications for the E190-E2 are:
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Typical Seating | 97 to 114 passengers |
| Range | 5,463 kilometers (2,950 nautical miles) |
| Length | 36.3 meters |
| Wingspan | 33.7 meters |
| Height | 10.7 meters |
Actual fuel efficiency and noise reduction depend on aircraft configuration and operating conditions.
Operational context and fleet impact
J-AIR is a regional subsidiary of the JAL Group, operating from Osaka International Airport (Itami). It currently operates 32 regional jets: 18 Embraer E170s with 76 seats each and 14 Embraer E190s with 95 seats each.
J-AIR operates domestic services across Japan, including routes from Memanbetsu in Hokkaido in the north to the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture in the south. It also operates from Tokyo Haneda, Fukuoka, Sapporo New Chitose, and Kagoshima airports.
With 32 current aircraft and 16 firm E190-E2 orders, fleet renewal will occur gradually over several years. The original E170 and E190 aircraft may remain in service for some years before being phased out. JAL has not disclosed how many of each type will be replaced initially.
The renewal comes as Japan’s domestic market faces pressure. Factors include falling business demand, long-term population changes, inflation-driven cost increases, and adverse currency movements.
Broader industry and strategic significance
The order aligns with the JAL Group Management Vision 2035, which aims to keep the domestic network sustainable. JAL described the domestic network as essential infrastructure for Japan.
President and group CEO Mitsuko Tottori said the domestic network supports local economies and daily life across Japan. She said the new aircraft, with its environmental performance and economic efficiency, would help the group maintain and develop a sustainable air network for the next generation while offering passengers a more comfortable experience.
The order follows All Nippon Airways' decision to order the E190-E2 for its regional operations. Embraer now has E2 orders from Japan’s two largest carriers.
JAL has not announced the final cabin configuration, aircraft deployment plan, or detailed retirement schedule for its current regional jets. Deliveries of the Embraer E190-E2 to J-AIR are scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2029.
