Aero Vodochody and Thales Belgium have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance the L-39 Skyfox Drone Hunter as a dedicated counter-unmanned aerial systems platform. The configuration, which transforms the jet trainer into a low-cost interceptor, was presented to the Czech public at NATO Days in Ostrava on September 19, 2026.

This formal cooperation includes continued integration and testing of Thales’ 70 mm laser-guided rocket system. The Drone Hunter concept directly addresses the growing cost imbalance in modern air defence, where expensive fighter jets or surface-to-air missiles are often deployed against inexpensive attack drones. The Skyfox itself has a published unit cost below $10 million.

Technical Integration and Capabilities

The Drone Hunter configuration integrates Thales Belgium’s FZ275 semi-active laser-guided rocket. This 70 mm weapon has an effective engagement range from 1,500 to 7,000 meters, with some program sources citing a range of more than 8 km. A key variant, the LGR275 Proxy unveiled at Eurosatory 2026, includes a proximity sensor and a warhead optimized for aerial targets.

For targeting, the aircraft uses a SiNAB Phoenix 10 electro-optical pod or a compatible SCAR pod for detection, tracking, and laser designation. The Skyfox does not carry its own radar. The intended employment scheme combines external cueing from ground radars, AWACS, or other fighters with final acquisition by the onboard pod.

The aircraft is designed to engage relatively slow and medium-speed targets. Published estimates place its target envelope at speeds between 150 and 600 km/h and altitudes up to 8,000 metres. This envelope includes Shahed-type attack UAVs and faster jet-powered drones.

The two-seat cockpit allows the crew to divide responsibilities during combat missions. The pilot concentrates on flight and interception while the weapons systems operator handles the sensor and engagement tasks. The aircraft is powered by a Williams International FJ44-4M turbofan, has a service ceiling around 11,500 metres, and can remain airborne for up to 4.5 hours.

Operational Status and Customer Outlook

The L-39 Skyfox, formerly known as the L-39NG, is the successor to the prolific L-39 Albatros. Its armed configuration was first shown at the Dubai Airshow in 2025. Aero Vodochody has already delivered Skyfox aircraft to customers including Vietnam, Hungary, and the Czech state-owned company LOM PRAHA. In June 2026, the manufacturer announced additional orders from Angola and a civil customer in North America.

However, as of October 5, 2026, Aero had not announced a launch customer for the specific Drone Hunter configuration. The company aims to have the kit ready for operational use by late 2026. The concept has garnered analytical attention as a potential model for affordable defence. Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute proposed a multinational NATO squadron of 16 to 24 aircraft dedicated to hunting attack drones.

The cost argument is central. Guided 70 mm rockets cost tens of thousands of euros per unit, a fraction of the price of short-range surface-to-air missiles. Also, the Skyfox’s flight-hour cost of around €2,000 starkly contrasts with the approximately €20,000 per hour for an F-16-class fighter. Lukáš Hora, a representative for Aero Vodochody, confirmed cooperation with Thales Belgium on the Drone Hunter concept. Production of the specialized LGR275 Proxy rocket variant was expected to scale up towards the end of 2026.
